How the CGPA calculators work

The Quick GPA tile above accepts a single term's total quality points and total credit hours. The International CGPA tile applies country-specific rules to every semester you add and returns your credit-weighted cumulative average, plus an approximate percentage using the local conversion rule.

Formula

CGPA = Σ(semester GPA × credits) ÷ Σ(credits) · GPA = Σ(quality points) ÷ Σ(credit hours)

Example

Sem 1 GPA 3.6 × 18 credits + Sem 2 GPA 3.8 × 16 = 125.6 quality points ÷ 34 = 3.69 CGPA

Terminology

GPA
Grade Point Average for a single term, computed from letter grades and credit hours.
SGPA
Semester GPA — the same idea as GPA, using the semester-based terminology common in India / AICTE universities.
CGPA
Cumulative GPA — a credit-weighted average of every semester you've completed.
WAM
Weighted Average Mark — Australian universities' weighted average of raw percentage marks (not a 4.0-scale GPA).

Frequently asked questions

What is CGPA?

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of your grade points across every semester, weighted by credit hours.

How is CGPA calculated?

CGPA = Σ(Semester GPA × Credits) ÷ Σ(Credits). Each semester's GPA is multiplied by that semester's credit hours, summed, then divided by total credits.

What is the difference between CGPA and SGPA?

SGPA is the grade point average for a single semester. CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters completed so far.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

On the 4.0 scale, percentage ≈ CGPA × 25. On the CBSE 10-point scale, percentage ≈ CGPA × 9.5. Your university may use a different multiplier.

How do I convert percentage to CGPA?

For 4.0 scale: CGPA ≈ Percentage ÷ 25. For 10-point scale: CGPA ≈ Percentage ÷ 9.5.

Is a 4.0 GPA the same as a 10.0 CGPA?

Both represent the maximum grade on their respective scales but they are not directly equivalent. Use a 10-to-4 converter (like WES) for admissions comparisons.

Which CGPA formula is used in Pakistan?

HEC-affiliated universities use the 4.0 scale with credit-hour weighting. Percentage is commonly estimated as CGPA × 25.

Which CGPA formula is used in India?

Most Indian universities follow the UGC 10-point scale; CBSE uses percentage ≈ CGPA × 9.5.

Can this calculator be used for USA universities?

Yes — select USA to use the standard 4.0 scale with credit-hour weighting used across US institutions.

Are these results official?

No. Grading rules vary by university, department, and academic year. Always confirm final results with your institution's transcript office.
